Oxford taught a lesson

Blues’ good start continues with a win against Oxford United, watched by Andy Munro.

Apart from an early scare in the first minute or so, Oxford hardly laid a glove on the Blues and in typical Gary Rowett style, they set themselves up just to be hard to beat

Although Paik Seung-ho scored what proved to be the winner when he fired home late in the first half, Kyogo Furuhashi could have scored at least one and maybe two before he was hauled off on the hour.

Both substitutes in the shape of Keshi Anderson and Tommy Doyle came on to play competently whilst Lyndon Dykes became a useful ploy in keeping the Oxford back line on their toes. Blues’ latest signing from Germany can’t be far away from contention as he was on the bench although not called upon.

A slender one-goal lead would normally be a cause for nerves but Blues’ backline were rock solid in the centre whilst both full-backs had time to maraud down the flanks. Man of the match, Ethan Laird was superb with both his running forward on the overlap but also his tackling back.

On my way from the ground I heard some Oxford fans in front of me discussing the game and saying, “Well we only lost by the odd goal,” but the bottom line is the Blues deserved their win with almost twice the amount of possession, more corners and more shots.

Some hard fixtures await but bring it on!
