Feet of clay in the Potteries

Blues are beaten at Stoke, watched by Andy Munro.

After losing to Port Vale, Blues suffered another disappointing trip to the Potteries when they went down to Stoke.

The first half again showed up that possession isn’t everything, with Blues having the majority of play yet registering nil attempts on goal. Whilst I wouldn’t be calling for the manager’s head, our players are his players. He has to stand or fall on his signings and his possession-based tactics perhaps need to be properly analysed in terms of when the ball’s in the opposition half and not the tippy happy stuff in our own.

Ryan Allsop made a couple of excellent saves but the defence in front of him, Christoph Klarer apart, creaked like a centenarian’s knees. Ethan Laird showed again that he is as ineffective in defence as he is effective going forward. Alex Cochrane had his worst game since he was taken to the cleaners last season against Newcastle whilst Phil Neumann still isn’t living up to the billing he received when he signed.

In front of them, Paik Seung-ho continues to be off-colour and further up front Jay Stanfield looked a little short of match sharpness, which is understandable. Tommy Doyle and Patrick Roberts were decent without setting the world alight. Substitute Marvi Ducksch continues to show that he’s either not fully fit or just slow and ponderous – the jury is currently out on that.

One bright spot was Lewis Koumas who was a fairly lively introduction as was Osayi Samuel. It’s still early days but losing can become a habit.
