Grassroots football authority joins climate programme

Birmingham County FA join the UNFCCC’s Sports for Climate Action initiative.

has been accepted to join the UNFCCC’s Sports for Climate Action initiative as a signatory to the Sports for Climate Action Framework.

The Sports for Climate Action initiative calls on sporting organisations to acknowledge the contribution of the sports sector to climate change and its responsibility to strive towards climate neutrality for a safer planet.

By signing the framework, Birmingham County FA has demonstrated its commitment to playing a part in ensuring the sports sector is on the path to a low-carbon future.

In line with the five core principles enshrined in the framework and the aims of the Paris Agreement, Birmingham County FA will strive to:

1) Promote greater environmental responsibility
2) Reduce the overall climate impact from sports
3) Use its platform to educate for climate action
4) Promote sustainable and responsible consumption
5) Advocate for climate action through our communications.

Speaking after the announcement, Birmingham County FA’s Business Insight Manager Richard Lindsay said: “Birmingham County FA are proud to have been accepted by the UN’s Sport for Climate Action and we fully understand our commitment and responsibility in creating a healthier and more sustainable game for generations to enjoy. By creating the Save Today, Play Tomorrow project we firmly believe that everyone involved in football at any level can play a positive role in making a difference.”

Birmingham County FA hope their commitment will inspire leagues, clubs, teams, players, match officials and supporters to raise their climate ambitions in a team effort to limit global warming to 1.5oC.

As part of the working group Birmingham County FA joins a worldwide community of leading sports organisations such as Premier League clubs Liverpool, Tottenham and Arsenal, along with other representation from sailing, rugby and tennis.
