City council backs green-up campaign.
Birmingham City Council is backing a campaign to get half a million people out and about cleaning up their local communities in March 2017 – building on a successful local day of action staged last November.
The brand new Great British Spring Clean will roll out for the first time in 2017, with a view to it becoming an annual event helping to bring people together and clean up the country.
And to build on a multi-agency day of action organised locally in November 2016, during which 34.85 tonnes of rubbish was picked up in Birmingham, the city council is now asking community organisations and individuals who care for their neighbourhoods to do their bit during the month of March.
In order to build on the national wave of participation that is expected, community-minded Brummies are being asked to save the weekend of March 3rd-5th in their diaries for events to tackle the blight of litter – and although the focus will be on those specific dates, events will be happening across the whole month of March.
Cllr Lisa Trickett, Cabinet Member for Clean Streets, Recycling and Environment at Birmingham City Council, said: “We are delighted to be supporting the Great British Spring Clean and we encourage as many groups, individuals and organisations as possible to take part.
“By taking a lead at a grassroots level, our communities can show they care about their neighbourhoods and we will make every effort to enable and support anyone who wants to get involved.
“Our day of action last November made a real difference and shows what can be achieved. This event is now the time for people from all 40 council wards to step up and we will support those who want to make a positive difference.”
