City baby unit to benefit from fundraising.
Thousands of the region’s smallest and sickest babies cared for at will now benefit from new, life-saving equipment, thanks to an incredible £40,078 donation from the Birmingham Law Society.
Led by President Mushtaq Khan, whose presidential year recently came to an end, BLS decided to raise vital funds for the hospital charity’s Tiny Babies, Big Appeal – a campaign which supports the care of sick and premature babies at the hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
Mushtaq was inspired to fundraise for the women’s hospital following a visit to the Neonatal Unit, after witnessing the life-saving care that was being provided to the most vulnerable babies.
Throughout a one-year period, BLS and its members arranged a calendar of fundraising events including bake-offs to balls and dinners to daring events, all of which enabled the hospital to purchase two vital pieces of equipment.
The equipment funded is a Panda Resuscitaire – a life-saving mobile unit which transports babies in need of breathing support – which is now being used to move babies to the hospital’s Neonatal Unit safely after birth. Plus, a state-of-the-art Information Centre is now in place, providing in-depth analysis of babies’ conditions – a significant technological step in neonatal monitoring at Birmingham Women’s Hospital.
Past Birmingham Law Society President, Mushtaq Khan, said: “I chose to support the Tiny Babies, Big Appeal as it’s such a worthy cause and I’m incredibly proud of our members, who all really got behind this special fundraising drive during my presidential year.
“We recently visited Birmingham Women’s Hospital and it was great to see the innovative new machines in action. We’re honoured that the money we’ve raised will make a tangible difference to the hospital and leave a lasting legacy from Birmingham Law Society.”
Eileen Rock, Fundraising Manager at Birmingham Women’s Hospital Charity, added: “We were absolutely blown away by Birmingham Law Society’s final fundraising total and would like to say a massive thank you to Mushtaq and his members for raising such a phenomenal amount for our Tiny Babies, Big Appeal.
“The money they have donated will make a massive difference to the lives of patients, families and staff on our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, enabling us to continue to push boundaries and do more for the sick babies in our care.”
The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Birmingham Women’s Hospital is the largest unit in the region, with over 1,500 admissions every year. To find out more about Birmingham Women’s Hospital Charity, click here.
