Saints go marching on

Andy Munro watches Blues go down at Southampton.

Southampton continued their recent decent run whilst Blues continued their dire away form and there wasn’t much else to say about this one.

There weren’t many Blues players who could be satisfied with their performances apart from keeper James Beadle who, whilst possibly at fault for the one goal, pulled off some excellent saves. The others who at least came away with some pride intact were Demarai Gray with another excellent strike and Tommy Doyle, who never stopped trying to create chances.

However, the majority of players in a blue shirt looked below par, not helped by conceding an early goal. Usually the one player who can be relied upon is Christoph Klarer but even he looked suspect at times against a mobile Saints side.

Up front, as usual, Jay Stansfield put in the hard yards but with little noticeable effect while Marvin Ducksch made little impact, an unfortunate pattern in his games leading the line away from St Andrews. Meanwhile Kyogo Furuhashi came on to remind us of his current knack of failing to hit the target which, of course, remains a concern.

This massive difference between home and away form is a puzzle that has to be solved and a different formation seems the obvious way to go. This could take the shape of one up front and three central defenders at the back with extra bodies in midfield.

With the next match in midweek away to an inconsistent QPR, Chris Davies needs to earn his substantial managerial corn.
