Virtual careers fair to showcase rail jobs

Webinar to showcase local job opportunities on HS2.

HS2 Ltd, the company delivering Britain’s new high-speed railway, is hosting a virtual careers fair on Wednesday 24 February to showcase the jobs the project is creating across the West Midlands.

The event is being hosted by HS2 Ltd’s community engagement team in a bid to ensure that local communities, who live near to the route of the new railway, are given every opportunity to benefit from upcoming skills and employment opportunities.

In January, HS2 Ltd launched its new online jobs board which displays all the current opportunities to work on HS2, within its supply chain. The jobs board is updated daily and already shows a huge variety of vacancies in the local area from apprenticeships to communications and engineering roles.

Susan Bridges, HS2 Ltd’s Senior Engagement Manager explains: “Local communities often ask, ‘How do we get a job working on HS2?’ It’s important we do everything we can to ensure that they know about the thousands of jobs the project is creating, and how they can search and apply for a role that’s right for them.”

HS2’s main works construction partner for the West Midlands, Balfour Beatty VINCI (BBV), will share details of upcoming opportunities that they will be recruiting and discuss the broad range of skills and expertise they are looking for. BBV expects to be one of the largest recruiters in the region over the next two years, forecasting that it will create around 7,000 jobs to deliver its section of the new high-speed rail network.

Kate Myers, HS2 Ltd’s Head of Skills, Education and Employment said: “With construction of HS2 rapidly gathering pace, our construction partners are bringing more local companies and suppliers on board, which is turn is creating more local job opportunities. We expect that momentum to continue in the months and years ahead, which really emphasises the importance that HS2 is playing in Britain’s economic recovery from COVID-19.”

The webinar is aimed at local people who are looking for work or a change of career. Birmingham-based charity Suited for Success will also attend the event to provide guidance on the support available to those looking to get back in to work after an employment break.

Delegates will hear about the breadth of opportunities coming on board, suited to those interested in both site-based and office-based job opportunities.

The event will be held from 16.00–18.00 on Wednesday 24th February. Delegates are encouraged to register their attendance in advance.
