As I’m on a short course of antibiotics (not COVID 19-related for those who might have seen me out and about), I made my first venture into the world of low/non-alcoholic wines. I also thought it might be useful as I have a number of Muslim friends, and when we meet for a bite to eat, I prefer not to take alcohol along.
Not having much knowledge of such things, when I originally went into my local Sainsbury’s, I was also after a couple of bottles of Barbican (remember that?). Casting my mind back over the years, it was perhaps a good job that they didn’t stock anything along those lines.
So I selected a bottle of Rawson’s Retreat, described as a “smooth and luscious” Cabernet Sauvignon. Well, it certainly had me in retreat with flavours that I can only describe as sour cherries, yogurt well past its sell-by date, and (not that I’ve tasted it) Cherry Blossom boot polish.
Even worse, after a couple of glasses I just felt the same as before, which I suppose is the whole point of this stuff. All in all, this was a wine tasting experience I won’t be repeating.
