Major roadworks have been in place for the last 12 months as part of the £500 million Paradise redevelopment, resulting in diversions and restricted access to adjoining Broad Street.

However, from Sunday December 4th buses and black cabs will now be able to turn right from Paradise Circus onto Broad Street. A traffic light controlled ‘bus gate’ will be introduced at the junction of Paradise with Broad Street, allowing buses and Hackney Carriages only to turn right at this junction. This will be temporarily overseen by police. This will affect the No 9, 82, 83, 87, 89, 120, 126, 127, 128, 129 and X10 bus routes, which previously had diverted around Newhall Street, Graham Street and Sheepcote Street, to join Broad Street closer towards Five Ways.

Jon Hayes, head of network delivery for Transport for West Midlands, part of the West Midlands Combined Authority, said: “Police will be stationed at Paradise and Broad Street to manage the right turn and at the junction of Smallbrook Queensway and Broad Street to manage the left turn.

“The return of this access to Broad Street is good news for bus passengers on the affected services, it means they no longer have to take a long diversion through the city centre and should do much to improve connectivity.”

Other traffic restrictions in place for the works remain in force. Travelling into the city down Broad Street the section east of Bridge Street remains limited to buses and taxis only, enforced by a fixed camera. From the south the left turn from Smallbrook Queensway in to Broad Street will also be restricted to Bus and Hackney Carriages only.
