The football season’s coming to an end and, at the Hawthorns, Terry Wills is starting to think it can’t come too soon.
Let’s say from the outset that the defeat at home to relegation threatened Wigan should never have happened. It left every Baggies fan, no more so than me, fuming at a display that literally gifted one of the favourites for the drop three points and left the Latics 800 unbelieving supporters wondering whether Father Christmas had decided they needed to believe what they wished for was possible.
Twice ahead via goals from Shane Long and Gareth McCauley (plus further missed chances) Albion took their foot off the pedal and suffered the inevitable consequences. Fair play to Wigan -they gave the impression that they had more desire and application and were prepared to
give 100% effort, in contrast to an Albion defensive display that was at times little short of embarrassing. Missed tackles, caught in possession, poor distribution, they were all there.
In addition the continuing nonsensical situation surrounding Peter Odemwingie (couldn’t be used as a substitute due to a confrontation with some supporters) summed up a miserable afternoon.
On to Manchester City and a setback that didn’t come as a surprise. Both teams made several changes – City due to Saturday’s cup final and Steve Clarke wanting to tinker with his starting line-up. One goal was enough to condemn the Baggies to yet another away defeat and leave them eighth in the table. But unless they can pick up points from the final two games that position could be in jeopardy.
On to the last away Greed League game, at Carrow Road to face a Norwich City also struggling to avoid the drop.Like Wigan they’ll be fighting tooth and nail and unless Steve Clarke can instil the application needed in an attempt to convince the team that holiday time is still two weeks away, then another embarrassing setback could be on the cards.
Canaries versus the Throstles – which set of supporters will be chirping at the end? Now, where did I put that bird seed?
Come on you Baggies
