There’s a few interesting events taking place at Leamington’s award-winning Assembly Rooms over the next few days.
Wednesday and Thursday sees the Painted Maypole Theatre company’s first production, an adaptation of the Shakespeare tragedy Titus Andronicus. Described by TS Eliot as “one of the stupidest and most uninspired plays ever witten” it’s certainly the Bard’s most bloodthirsty work and this adaptation updates the drama by drawing on wars from throughout the twentieth century. Tickets are £7.50.
Saturday sees the arrival of Britain’s best-known modern jazzman, saxophonist Courtney Pine. Multi-award winner and honoured with the OBE in 2000 and CBE nine years later, Pine is also a broadcaster and writer, whose new album Europa attempts to examine African influence on the development of Europe. Tickets £17.
Finally, creeping into next week, Chris Difford and Boo Hewardine will be performing on Monday 14th March. Difford is best known for his work with Squeeze, for whom he wrote some of the best lyrics in British pop history, many of which will be given a fresh airing on the Assembly stage. Boo Hewerdine was singer with the Bible, and has written songs for Eddie Reader, kd lang and Natalie Imbruglia, amongst others. Tickets are £15.
