Could this be true…a fully-deserved win on the back of a superb battling performance against promotion challengers? Dare I suggest that it could have something to do with fielding a normal back four, a winger, and a centre-forward playing in that position? Yet before the match, I had heard some dark rumours from somebody ‘in the know’ saying that there had been outbreaks of fighting in the dressing room and on the training pitch and that the club was in turmoil. Luckily, it’s a funny old game and this game was the epitome of that cliché.
Blues completely dominated a very mediocre looking Leeds team with Boga sending tremors down their defence every time he got the ball. Almost as pleasingly, Gallagher won almost every ball in the air and was the perfect centre-forward, apart from the goalscoring piece of the jigsaw.
This, of course, was worrying in that Blues dominated the first half without really threatening an end product. Yet they stuck at it in the second period and got their reward when sub Jota fired in a shot that was only parried to Maghoma, who rifled home. The players then saw out the match reasonably comfortably even if the same couldn’t be said for a nervous crowd.
Mind you, generally the Blues supporters were magnificent, drowning out the away fans’ dirge of “We Love Leeds” with some rousing renditions of Keep Right On. This win was despite a ref who gave us nothing and spared his cards on several erring Leeds players.
It was a very valuable three points, with the teams immediately above us getting good results. However, it’s how we play that is going to be the key rather than what happens to those above us.
