Cape and Capability

New Artrix exhibition celebrates landscape gardener’s 300th anniversary.

A stunning and intriguing exhibition by The Embroiderer’s Guild is on display at Artrix Gallery this September. Celebrating the 300th anniversary of the birth of landscape designer, Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown, the works have all been produced using textile art techniques including embroidery, felting, dyeing and weaving. Many works show exquisitely created scenes of the classic English landscapes that Capability Brown designed for stately homes and there are also several abstract pieces which draw on the colours and textures of the landscape.

TC Peppercorn, Artrix Exhibitions Co-Ordinator commented: “This is a wonderful exhibition to explore. The works are so intricate and with some it’s hard to believe they are made from fabric and thread. I’d urge anyone to come and take a look: you will be amazed.”

The Embroiderers’ Guild aims to nurture an enjoyment of embroidery and enable anyone to participate at any level, whether young people learning to stitch, professional artists or someone who simply appreciates fabric and thread. They believe textiles are as relevant today as they have always been, and there is a place for both the traditional, fine hand stitching alongside the bold and contemporary machine work.

Artrix is also showcasing the work of Avoncroft Young Embroiderers in its Vestibule Gallery on the top floor. The Young Embroiderers will be hosting an open ‘Stitch-In’ from 10am in Artrix Foyer on Saturday 17th September and everyone is welcome to join them to have a go at sewing and to create an Autumn leaf for their fabric tree!

Both exhibitions are open Monday to Saturday 10am-4pm until September 25th and admission to Artrix Gallery is free. For more information please call the Box Office on 01527 577330 or visit www.artrix.co.uk
