Crowds visit and take part in charity works. 

On Saturday 12th October, Guide Dogs, Queen Alexandra College (QAC), Focus Birmingham and The National Blind Children’s Society (NBCS) hosted a Community Fun Day and Dog Show from their shared site in Harborne.

Despite the wet weather, the day was a resounding success, with a large number of visitors from across the region. Those attending the event were able to learn more about the four charities as well as participate in lots of fun activities including a chocolate tombola, face painting and an afternoon tea party.

The shows also proved to be incredibly popular – with lots of competition for Best Bitch and Most Handsome Dog.

Visitors were also invited to learn more about the experience of sight loss and had the opportunity to have a blindfolded walk with a sighted guide. This was quite an experience for many who had not previously thought of the impact that this could have upon a persons’ life.

One such visitor was Phil Bennion, Liberal Democrat Member of European Parliament for the West Midlands Euro Constituency. In addition to participating in a sighted guide demonstration, Mr Bennion was able to learn more about the work of the four charities and the impact that they have on the local and wider communities.

Visitor to the event, John Carroll commented “We have lived in the local area for over thirty years, but I was not aware of everything that goes on from this particular site. It is wonderful to hear how these charities make a difference to the lives of so many and I am very pleased that we came to support this event today. We look forward to coming again next year.”
