Newly appointed Lord Mayor of Birmingham, Councillor Mike Leddy and MP for Birmingham Northfield, Richard Burden joined pupils and teachers from schools across South Birmingham at an event designed to celebrate healthy living.
Held at Edgbaston Cricket Ground, the event saw representatives from 21 primary schools come together to showcase a range of activities currently being undertaken as part of the Health for Life in primary schools programme.
Lord Mayor of Birmingham, Councillor Mike Leddy said: “I thoroughly enjoyed meeting the children and finding out more about the projects they are involved with. I’m passionate about encouraging young people to be active and healthy, so it’s fantastic to see an initiative which promotes healthy living across the city.”
The Health for Life programme, which is currently running in primary and secondary schools, as well as in various locations across the community, is funded by the Mondelēz International foundation, and delivered by the Health Education Service (part of Services for Education), working with Life Education Centres West Midlands and The Conservation Volunteers.
Sonia Chhatwal, community affairs manager at Mondelēz International, said: “The great thing about Health for Life is that it’s extremely flexible; the programme can be tailored to suit those involved.
“We’ve heard about a school creating a brand new kitchen for cooking lessons, pupils taking part in bikeability and playground song-time initiatives, students showcasing their hula-hooping skills and even a group of pupils showing us some newly hatched chicks.”
Dr Sandra Passmore, Education Adviser at the Health Education Service, added: “The primary school programme aims to make a sustainable difference to the lifestyles of children in the area and so it’s important that we give all those involved the opportunity to get together and share ideas.”
Currently in its second year, Health for Life in primary schools is already seeking schools to participate in the third intake of the five year programme.
