Andy Munro sees Blues beat Wrexham in the battle of the moguls.
With Blues on a bad run, this didn’t look an easy fixture and was not helped by Marvin Ducksch being unavailable due to ‘disciplinary’ issues.
Having said that, Blues still fielded a strong side with a set-up fielding four forwards. In the first half they had the edge but couldn’t find a way through. Both wingers were in scintillating form but despite getting into some promising positions they couldn’t find the finish although it just looked a matter of time.
Luckily the start of the second half saw Blues get their own just desserts when Carlos Vincente started to justify his fee by deftly heading home to cap a fine performance. A further goal followed following a corner when Christoph Klarer made no mistake from close in. Blues should have also had a penalty but the referee inexplicably waved play on when one of our players was blatantly tripped inside the box.
Although he didn’t score, Jay Stansfield never gave the Wrexham defence a moment’s rest whilst Ibrahim Osman was his usual unplayable self until he went off with what (understandably given his workrate) looked like cramp.
However the star of the show has to be the returning Kai Wagner, whose coolness in defence and superb distribution were hallmarks of his display.
Let’s hope that this level of display is repeated now until the end of the season. If so, it might yet save Chris Davies from what seemed likely to be the inevitable chop.
