Blades cut down

Blues beat Sheffield United in the Carabao Cup with Andy Munro watching.

Blues cut it fine against Sheffield United, with a winner in the dying minutes, but in reality the game should have been home and hosed by half-time.

Demarai Gray was non-stop in the first-half, chasing back on the one hand and, on the other, weaving his way forward but never over-elaborating. That commitment was illustrated by not only stopping one very promising Blades counterattack but also laying on the first goal for Kyogo Furuhashi. In fact the Japanese new arrival could have had a hat-trick if his shooting had been better and although his goal was a tap-in, his speed and awareness took him into that position.

There was lots to like, beginning with keeper James Beadle commanding his area sometimes almost too casually. The back four were sound as the proverbial pound, Tommy Doyle and Tomoki Iwata buzzing around in front of them. In fact, the on-loan Doyle had a legitimate claim to being man of the match.

Of course, with Blues, nothing is quite simple and Gus Hamer, the former Sky Blue, came up with a wonder goal although Blues had a good claim for it to be disallowed when the referee and a home defender were involved in a pile-up.

Yet Blues weren’t finished and brought on some big guns, including Jay Stanfield who predictably hammered home the winner in the closing stages

Generally it was a good all-round performance which continues to augur well for the season ahead. Incidentally, Eiran Cashin was commendably solid at the back and perhaps the only question that remains is the effectiveness of Willum Willumsson at this higher level although, to be fair, he had a hand in the winner.
