Exit for Exeter

Blues beat Exeter City to move a step closer to Wembley. Andy Munro watches.

With nine changes, Blues showed the depth of their squad by winning fairly comfortably at Exeter despite the narrow scoreline.

The home side, in fairness, did deserve a consolation goal although this was gift-wrapped by the inconsistent Bailey Peacock-Farrell. Other than that the only concern at the back was a rather shoddy performance from Dion Sanderson and if he moves for a fee in the January transfer window then he will go with the blessing of most Bluenoses.

The depth of Blues’ squad was emphasised by stellar midfield performances from Marc Leonard and Luke Harris whilst Ayumu Yokohama was a bundle of tricks, laying on the goal for Keshi Anderson, whose consistency is enviable as he quietly but effectively goes about his business.

However, perhaps the most pleasing element of this performance was the return of the talented Lee Buchanan, ensuring he doesn’t remain a forgotten man. Apart from a couple of early moments of rustiness, he played like he’d never been away.

It’s now getting to the stage where the Football League Trophy is moving out of the M. Mouse category as far as Blues are concerned and is worth taking a bit more seriously. Peterborough have yet to get through at the time of writing but wouldn’t a ‘Fry-up’ at Wembley be a fitting occasion?
