Andy Munro finds a fusion of music, culture and food.
A hidden musical gem on the fringes of the Balti Triangle is the long-established Musikstan set up at the Old Print Works on the Moseley Road.
I went to one of their events as Billy No Mates as my wife couldn’t make it but glad I made the effort. There was a friendly crowd, a good assortment of beers, an excellent vegan parsnip and coconut curry but best of all some great live world music.
First session was from a Mali multi-instrumentalist Moussa Dembele, who I don’t think is related to the former Fulham player of the same name, but anyway his music was Premier League class. He makes his own instruments and writes music with some haunting tunes. He would have made a fortune if he had brought some CDs to sell.
The second act was equally good; an Indian duo Dal Singh and Akash with some hypnotic tunes. It’s well worth packing your bags to Musikstan for the next gig – they’re all highly recommended!
