Birmingham youth theatre presents

Stage2’s upcoming production of The Watsons to play at the Crescent.

Stage2, Birmingham’s longest-running youth theatre, is proud to present its Autumn production, The Watsons – a witty, sharp, and high-energy battle of wits, love, and artistic control, brought to life through the voices of young people. The production is directed by Mark Shaun Walsh (who recently directed a 5-star production of Nigel Slater’s Toast at The Crescent), alongside Stage2 member Phoebe Preston as Assistant Director.

Emma Watson is young, beautiful, and back in the marriage market. But just as the suitors start circling, the story hits a dead end: Jane Austen has abandoned the manuscript, leaving Emma stranded in a half-finished world. Enter Laura, the modern-day playwright who steps into the 19th century to finish the job. But Emma and her family aren’t willing to be puppets anymore! As the boundaries between creator and character collapse, a riotous battle for control begins.

Laura Wade’s critically acclaimed adaptation joyfully dismantles the traditional period drama. Stage2’s production offers audiences the chance to engage with its rich literary themes, metatheatre, and sharp social satire in an accessible, hilarious, and emotionally intelligent format that brings fresh modern relevance to classic storytelling.

At the heart of the show is the clash between character and creator, as Emma Watson fights for her own destiny. Casting young performers alongside a vibrant ensemble brings fresh authenticity, energy, and honesty to the production. For audiences of all ages, this creates a compelling point of connection, seeing young people navigate big questions around identity, agency, and creative freedom.

The production is performed by a diverse ensemble of young performers and creatives, with company members leading onstage, backstage, and in technical roles. Stage2’s production is an absurdist, high-energy reimagining of the Regency era that refuses to play by the rules. Weaving together contemporary dance, dynamic physical theatre, bold ensemble work, and a fourth wall that was made to be broken, we transform a classic setting into a theatrical explosion.

Designed especially for young performers and audiences, the production approaches its themes with care, spark, and intelligence, trusting young people to engage with ambiguity, sharp humor, and modern commentary. In a world of balls, bonnets, and breaking the fourth wall, The Watsons are no longer just looking for a happy ending; they are fighting for their lives, their lines, and their liberty.

Jane Austen wrote the beginning. Laura Wade wrote the rebellion.

The Watsons will be performed at The Crescent Theatre’s Ron Barber Studio on Thursday 17th December and Friday 18th December at 7:15pm, and Saturday 19th December at 2:00pm and 7:15pm. The running time is approximately 2 hours. Tickets are £16.50 and are available via The Crescent Theatre box office.
