Andy Munro sees Blues win at Port Vale.

Blues dispatched Saturday’s opponents fairly comfortably, running out 2-0 winners but it’s worth remembering that this was Port Vale, not Porto.

Emil Hansson was given a run out, presumably to put him in the shop window, and Lyndon Dykes made an appearance maybe for the same reason. Jay Stansfield, Paik Seung-ho and new defender Phil Neumann were sidelined through ‘minor’ injuries but it’s a bit concerning that the latter is already unavailable and begs the question as to whether he is injury-prone.

Either way the defence was generally very solid, with Ryan Allsopp almost redundant and Christoph Klarer again immense, perhaps showing he will still remain our star defender. Alex Cochrane was reliable as ever but that can’t be said for defender Eiran Cashin, who was a bit of a slightly concerning mixed bag. Out wide Bright Osayi-Samuel still looks more like a winger than a full-back.

Things were a lot more impressive in midfield, where Tommy Doyle showed his real class and Tomoki Iwata was his usual consistent self, hoovering up any danger.

Further forward, Keshi Anderson showed that despite all the signings, he is worthy of real consideration and Willum Willumsson will have done his possibly fragile confidence no harm by netting. Demerai Gray also showed flashes of his undoubted talent but probably still isn’t up to full speed. However, Kyogo Furihashi has yet to net and rarely threatened, which has to be a concern if he is seen as a goalscoring panacea to replace the departed Alfie May.

Hopefully, a few of the above misgivings will be unfounded but that remains to be seen. On a final note, the youngsters/second string were humbled three-nil by the mighty Cobblers of Northampton, which perhaps sums up that performance.
