Wolf Hall at Birmingham Town Hall

Music and readings from the acclaimed television drama.

Following the extraordinary critical and public reaction to the television drama Wolf Hall – The Mirror and the Light, fans of the award-winning Wolf Hall trilogy will have the opportunity to experience a unique concert, blending music, words and imagery from the books and the television series, including a date at Birmingham Town Hall on 30th May.

Wolf Hall – The Mirror and the Light has been nominated for Best Drama Series in this year’s BAFTAs, as well as a Best Supporting Actor nomination for Damian Lewis. Accompanying Thomas Cromwell’s on-screen machinations and hushed conversations in shadowy palace corners is original music by award-winning composer Debbie Wiseman, performed by the Locian Ensemble of London and soprano Grace Davidson. Her soundtrack to both series deftly captures the atmosphere of this complex time of intrigue and conspiracy at the court of King Henry VIII.

With its subtle use of string ensemble, period instruments, and haunting, wordless vocals, the music perfectly captures Cromwell’s character at this critical period in his life and career, where we see him caught between his desire to do what is right and his natural instinct to survive.

Now, in this special concert setting, Debbie, the Ensemble and soprano Grace Davidson perform music from the critically acclaimed score, alongside extracts from the Wolf Hall trilogy read by BAFTA-nominated actor Anton Lesser. Wolf Hall imagery sets the scene for this intimate evening of drama, intrigue, and storytelling.

“I am very excited and looking forward to performing Wolf Hall in Concert with Debbie and the wonderful Locrian Ensemble,”
said Anton Lesser, who plays Thomas More in the BBC series and is widely recognised as one of the most accomplished actors of his generation.

“Creating the score for Wolf Hall has been a highlight of my career, so to have the opportunity of performing it live with the exceptional musicians that performed on the score is a real thrill,” said Debbie Wiseman.

“Alongside the brilliant Anton Lesser reading specially selected excerpts from Hilary Mantel’s novel, we’re hoping to transport the audience into the intrigue and subterfuge of King Henry’s court.”

Wolf Hall in Concert is touring and can be seen at Birmingham Town Hall on Friday 30th May.
