Blues’ win at Burton Albion is watched by Andy Munro.
The march towards a record points tally was kept on track without too much trouble, despite the arrears being reduced in the dying seconds of the game.
Ryan Allsop was only called upon a couple of times and he dealt with the situations admirably. In front of him Christoph Klarer, in particular, was masterly in his almost complete dominance of a fairly limited attack. Alfons Sampsted opened the scoring near the tail end of the first period with a rasping drive and to add to the Brewers’ misery, Jay Stansfield rifled home a second.
A number of key players were rested although both Keshi Anderson and Pak Seung-ho came on for the final third of the game and impressed. More importantly, the starting line-up had proved
Blues have he strength in depth to build up a two goal lead and it was good to see Willum Willumsson have a hand in one of the goals and play a bit like his earlier-season self. Taylor Gardner-Hickman also showed his versatility, which is bound to be an asset in the Championship.
Burton Albion are hardly Borussia Dortmund but nobody is a pushover when they are fighting to stay in their league. Nevertheless, it will be a comparative footballing treat to see Blues take on the talents of the Championship next season. We can hope that this will see the team raising their game to the required standard, with the support of a couple of new players in key positions.
