James Bovington talks to Thai boxer Ryan Moore.
A local Thai boxer is looking for extra sponsors who will help him prepare for world title professional fights with “the aim of bringing belts back to Birmingham.”
“I had a successful amateur career before turning professional aged seventeen,” said Ryan Moore. “I was four times a British and European champion and had won a world champion belt by fifteen. I turned professional aged seventeen and have since won English and British titles. I’m currently ranked ninth in the UK at my 69kg weight.”
Fighting as Ryan ‘The Boy’ Moore, the twenty-one-year-old trains at the K-Star gym in Sheldon under Adrian Maguire, where he started out aged nine. “I also work there as a Thai boxing instructor. I was interested as a young child watching videos of Thai boxing, or Muay Thai as it’s called and knew immediately that I wanted to learn to fight.
“I like the opportunities the sport has given me, both as a fighter and an instructor. I like the lifestyle and the structure it gives me in daily life. I like how rewarding it can be when you put in the work to achieve your goals. My dedication to the sport has demanded sacrifices reducing time available for the social life most young people enjoy but Thai Boxing has allowed me to travel all over the world meeting like-minded people.”
“Ryan was a highly successful junior winning multiple national and two international titles,” explained coach Maguire. “Turning pro successfully at just seventeen shows he’s an exceptional talent and now he’s a top ten ranked national champion shows he’s destined for the top. He made his pro debut as a teenager and showed the exceptional talent he possesses.
“Ryan’s planning to spend six months in Thailand from late April to test and perfect his skills against the very best fighters and demonstrate his professional world champion potential.”
A former pupil of Warren Farm Primary and Great Barr Secondary schools, Moore comes from a big family and has always lived in Kingstanding. He made his first trip abroad, “to Thailand with the gym in 2015. I was twelve and it was my first time away from my parents. I went back last year to train at Sasiprapa Gym in Bangkok and then did a bit of tourism with my girlfriend Natallie and got my first tradition Thai tattoo (Sak Yant).
“Natalie and I are currently planning our move to Koh Samui to live, train and fight there for six months. I might get to meet Superlek who I enjoy watching and whose style I’m keen to emulate. Prior to that I’ve a major fight on 26th April 2025 at The Hanger Events Centre in Wolverhampton.”
Moore describes himself as, “quiet, coming across as private and reserved. I’m a deep thinker really who likes reading and listening to music. I’ve recently been reading The Book of Five Rings by Miyamoto Musashi, described as being about the Japanese way of the sword and Can’t Hurt Me by American writer David Goggins.
“I’ve no desire to be the loudest person in a room. Natalie and I like cooking and trying new foods and we’re looking forward to being immersed in Thai culture. I’m totally committed to this sport which has given my life structure and meaning. I realise I might get injured. Both fighters know this and it’s a risk we’re prepared to take. We take precautions such as only sparring light to reduce injury frequency.”
Like all elite athletes Moore needs sponsorship. “I’m ambitious. I want to compete for a WBC title and fight on One Championship which is a Thai boxing UFC. I want a 67kg world ranking and I want to enjoy the experience of fighting across the world. But more than anything I want to bring a world title to Birmingham.
“I’m grateful to supporters and my current sponsors D. Moore Scaffolding Ltd, TM Property Group and Active Nutrition. New potential sponsors can contact me on Instagram @rjstar99_ or email [email protected].”
“K-Star is a huge name in British Muay Thai scene with six branches across the West Midlands. We offer classes to all ages and abilities,”said Adrian Maguire. Contact K-Star on Instagram @k_star_thaiboxing or by e-mail to [email protected]
