Andy Munro watches as Blues draw with Hull City.
This was one of those end of season games that sometimes take place well before the end of the season. In fairness Hull were the better of two poor teams in the first period but Blues livened up in the second half to be worthy of a share of the points.
Part of the reason for the post-interval improvement was that Blues reverted to a back four in the second period, giving Onel Hernandez the opportunity to maraud forward and also to give our defenders some much needed clarity on whom they should be marking. Add to that the withdrawal of an off colour Ivan Sunjic and the introduction of a fairly lively Taylor Richards and this all helped make a difference.
Having said that, game changers like Tahith Chong and Juninho Bacuna had the proverbial mares and even the pick of the bunch Hernandez spoilt his dazzling footwork wth a poot final ball. However, the defence was fairly solid after a shaky first five minutes not helped by some diabolical kicking from neal Etheridge. Probably the most heartening aspect of the defence was an excellent performance by young Nico Gordon, both calm on the ball and also not afraid to shout instructions. Hopefully more senior defenders will take note of his example!
Still, we now look pretty safe given other results but it would be nice to see some of our youngsters given an outing just as Gordon has made the most of his opportunity.. This can then help inform our transfer targets for the close season.
