Birmingham Jazz presents…

More top-quality music in the Jewellery Quarter.

The latest post lockdown gig from Birmingham Jazz at 1,000 Trades sees the return of Chris Batchelor and his quartet Pigfoot on Friday 9th October.

Pigfoot takes a fresh look at Louis Armstrong, Jelly Roll Morton, Fats Waller et al. This innovative reimaging of classic early jazz has to be heard to be believed. They specialise in passing classic tunes through their multi-idiomatic mangle while still sounding like affectionate fans of the originals. The tunes of the pioneers of jazz are reworked with a mixture of delicate poignancy and bumpy street-band nonchalance.

Chris Batchelor is a renowned trumpeter and composer. He gained his first professional experience with Dudu Pukwana’s Zila aged 17 and subsequently became a founder member, composer and soloist with Loose Tubes, contributing many pieces to the repertoire of the band from 1984-1990. He was also active at this time as a member of legendary world music trailblazers 3 Mustaphas 3, as well as enjoying a varied diet of gigs with Chris McGregor’s Brotherhood of Breath, Congolese soukous band Taxi Pata Pata and Ashley Slater’s Microgroove.

The other members of the band are equally notable and this is going to be an unusual and special night.
