Sealed Knot to fight Birmingham battle

Aston Park to host Civil War re-enactment for Heritage Week.

Visitors to Aston Park at the weekend will be able to witness a historic battle as part of Birmingham Heritage Week.

The Sealed Knot, the oldest re-enactment society in the UK and the single biggest in Europe, will be staging an English Civil War display in the park on Sunday, September 13.

Aston Hall, which stands in the grounds, was itself attacked and badly damaged by Parliamentary troops during the Civil War.

Running from 11am to 3pm, the free event will include a regimental muster with live cannon and musket fire and a living history camp. There will also be an opportunity to walk through Aston Hall and see objects from the 17th century, as well as dressing up and activities for children.

Councillor Waseem Zaffar, chairman of the Birmingham Heritage Week Steering Group, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity to experience life during the English Civil War in a location where battle actually took place.

“In addition to being able to watch some exciting re-enactments and take in the sights and sounds of the living history camp, visitors will also be able to enjoy the beautiful surroundings of the park and hall. This is just one of many events taking place during Heritage Week, which runs from September 10th to 17th and includes exhibitions, concerts, trails and walks.

“There is something for everyone, so I hope that as many people as possible will make the most of this wonderful opportunity to learn more about their city and its history.”
