Student production for city centre theatre

BOA present Betty Blue Eyes at the Old Rep.

Get your trotters on and head to the Old Rep Theatre, as Musical Theatre students from Birmingham Ormiston Academy present the musical comedy Betty Blue Eyes from 19th–21st March.

With exclusive license from Cameron Mackintosh, students in year 13 on the academy’s Musical Theatre pathway will be capturing Gilbert and Joyce Chilvers’ quest to get their share of the illegal pork roast destined for a banquet to celebrate the royal wedding. Based on the 1984 film A Private Function, and a former West End production, Betty Blue Eyes is a laugh-out-loud story with music and lyrics by George Stiles and Anthony Drew.

The feel-good favourite is heading to the stage at Birmingham’s Old Rep, following BOA’s takeover of the theatre last year. The deal secured the iconic premises as a platform for talented young students to gain practical experience, both on and off the stage, with the school set to stage a number of other performances there throughout the year. Alongside the talented students, the Old Rep Theatre also plays host to a number of amateur and professional companies, offering a wide variety of productions from plays to musicals on the famous stage.

Located in the heart of Birmingham, BOA is a creative, digital and performing arts academy for talented young people aged between 14 and 18 in the region. The school’s Musical Theatre pathway is one of the most popular course options, enabling students to develop and extend their skills and knowledge in the three disciplines of dance, acting and singing.

Gaynor Cheshire, principal at BOA said: “We’re honoured to be able to exclusively present Betty Blue Eyes at the Old Rep Theatre, showcasing the extraordinary talent of some of our Musical Theatre students. They have all thoroughly enjoyed working on the West End favourite, which is just one of a number of fantastic shows we have scheduled at the Old Rep throughout the year.”
