Birmingham’s Town Hall plays host to jazz legend Wayne Shorter next Thursday Nov 1.

The saxophonist is frequently cited as one of the most important musicians performing today, having journeyed through styles such as hard bop, jazz fusion and Latin. He’s recorded not only with artists such as Joni Mitchell, Herbie Hancock, Miles Davis and Carlos Santana, but over 20 albums of his own material.

The 79-year-old made his name composing for and playing with Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers in the 1950s, before going on to join Miles Davis’ Second Great Quintet in 1964 and eventually founding fusion group Weather Report.

He has won nine Grammy Awards and the New York Times has labelled him   ‘one of the most significant composers and individual saxophonists in jazz’.

To kick off the evening, three talented young musicians from Birmingham will open the gig.

Reuben James (piano), James Banner (bass) and Ric Yarborough (drums) – who make up the city’s Jazzlines Trio – will perform a 30 minute set before the Grammy-award-winning US saxophonist takes to the stage with Danilo Perez (piano), John Patitucci (bass) and Brian Blade (drummer).

The Jazzlines Trio have been involved in various creative ensemble and educational projects with Jazzlines, Town Hall & Symphony Hall and Sound It Out for over five years. and Chris). James and Ric are at Birmingham Conservatoire while Reuben is at Trinity Laban.
