Summer holiday activities at The Public

This summer an abundance of fun-filled activities, uplifting children’s theatre and free interactive exhibitions will keep the whole family entertained at The Public in West Bromwich.

Throughout the holidays, from 23 July to 31 August, visitors to the iconic Black Country venue will be able to get creative in the daily themed Summer Art Camp, learn loads of cool skills in a computer game workshop, and even keep fit in a Zumba class, designed exclusively for kids!

Den buildingEvery Monday to Friday during the summer, the Summer Art Camp will showcase some of the most exciting workshops and activities held at The Public over the last year.  Each week will take a different theme, with all ages able to take part in a wide range of fun-filled activities from light drawing and stop frame animation to craft making and mug design.

Each Tuesday and Thursday LearnPlay Foundation will be holding a free ‘Gaming Showcase’, where over 11s are invited to try their hand at playing, editing and creating computer games.  Gaining hands-on experience with new up and coming games developers, the drop-in sessions will provide a great opportunity to find out more about the creative gaming industry.

A child friendly Zumba class, Zumbatomic, will keep youngsters entertained throughout the break.  A great way to keep fit whilst having loads of fun, the dance-fitness class will take place on 21 and 28 July, and 4 and 11 August.  During the hour long classes, 4 to 11 year olds will be able to learn cool dance steps and routines while listening to child friendly songs.  On Saturday 25 August, a Bhangra workshop, Bhangra Bounce, will also get the blood pumping.  Led by Sohan Kailey of Aashiyana Arts, participants will be able to experience vibrant dance through music and movement.

During the summer holidays, The Public will also welcome two magical theatre productions, ‘Paper Wings’ and ‘Draw Me a Bird’.  Paper Wings, on Wednesday 25 July, is a new wordless wonder by Rhubarb Theatre Company following the story of Tatao and her mother, as they seek to start a new life, and on Friday 17 August, Peut-être Theatre present, Draw Me a Bird, a beautiful piece of dance theatre for young audiences about a little bird who loves the songs of a Parisian street musician.

Linda Saunders, Managing Director at The Public said, “This summer promises to our busiest yet, with a host of fun-filled activities on every day for the whole family to enjoy.  Visitors to The Public will be able to get creative in our drop-in workshops, experience fantastic theatre, explore our interactive exhibitions or simply grab a bite to eat in our café.”
