Coming up at Artrix

Watch, listen and do it yourself.

Lynched, one of the foremost traditional folk groups from Dublin, are playing at Artrix on Friday 16th September. The four-piece group are frontrunners in an upsurge in popularity in Irish folk music and combine distinctive four-part harmonies with arrangements with uilleann pipes, concertina, Russian accordion, fiddle and guitar.

The band lynched-1-sml-credit-brian-flanaganare on a whistle stop tour of the UK and their Artrix gig will be their only one in the West Midlands. Their repertoire covers everything from traditional Irish to Dublin music hall ditties and they’ll be performing some tracks from their hugely successful album Cold Old Fire along with more recent material.

Tickets cost £15.00

Artrix has a longstanding reputation for being one of the top comedy venues in the UK and this autumn sees a host of female stand-up acts taking to the stage.

In The Kardashians Made Me Do It Shazia Merza undertakes an exploration of love, life and Jihadi brides. The award- winning comedian, who is originally from Birmingham, has appeared on BBC’s Have I Got News for You and performed in stand-up shows across the world.

Star of BBC2’s Mock The Week and Channel 4’s 8 Out of 10 Cats, Ellie Taylor deals with that pesky bit of marriage known as monogamy in her new show Infidelliety. Zoe Lyons is also hitting the road with her brand new show Little Misfit in a year that has seen her appear at Live at the Apollo and on The John Bishop Show. Zoe was the awkward gay kid at school but now she has reached a point in life when actually fitting in would be terrifying.

In Stick or Twist, Kerry Godliman delivers her straight talking brand of quick wit and bewilderment and deals with some of life’s anomalies. Why is there a Buddha at the garden centre and why does she need to go and collect her children’s teeth from the dentist?

Shazia Merza is at Artrix on Sunday 18th September. Tickets are £14.00 (£12 over 60s and students). Ellie Taylor is on Saturday 1st October, tickets are £12 (£10 over 60s and students). Kerry Godliman is at Artrix on Saturday 8th October and tickets are £13.50. Zoe Lyons performs on Thursday 27th October and tickets are £14.00.

Artrix are also launching a new series of workshops this month, with classes to suit all ages.

If you’re new to scriptwriting or want to develop your skills then Artrix’s brand new course on Dramatic Writing could be just what you need to get you started. Participants are invited to join writer and educator Caroline Jester to explore where stories come from, the best locations to find them and the structures that support the narrative.

Adults can try Ballet and Belly Dancing or learn some sparkling songs at the SongStars Showchoir. The Showchoir is led by Estelle Williams, a professional teacher and former stage singer. The choir, which welcomes new members, learn a wide range of pop songs, show and film tunes and give regular performances.

The Adult Ballet Beginners Class is an excellent introduction to ballet for those who have never tried it before and the intermediate class includes some pointe work, floor exercises and barre work. The Belly Dancing class is for all levels and although it is low impact, it helps build core strength and increases flexibility.

Future stage stars can take a bow at the Artrix Youth Theatre with sessions for 6-9 year olds on Tuesday evenings or Saturday afternoons for 10-16 year olds. 14-19 year olds also have a unique opportunity to join Artrix Young Rep, a brand new youth theatre company set up in collaboration with The Birmingham Repertory Theatre.

For young singers aged 5-9 there’s a Little Songstars Showchoir and a Junior Songstars Showchoir which caters for ages 10-15.

Last but by no means least Sensory Play Sessions for babies and toddlers aged 8 weeks to 24 months begin on 7th October. Sensory play is a fun and dynamic way to help babies and toddlers refine their sense of hearing, smell, touch, taste and sight.

TC Peppercorn, Artrix Engagement and Exhibitions Co-Ordinator, said “These courses and workshops offer a fantastic opportunity for people of all ages to try something new this autumn. We hope that people will come along and do a taster session before booking.”
