Young Brummies set to learn how to change the world.
Saturday 29th March will see the first ever “social hackathon” event from the national youth leadership charity UpRising.
Taking place at the REP theatre in Birmingham, the free bootcamp-style event will bring together young people from across Birmingham to teach them how to design projects to improve their communities
Over the course of the day participants aged 16-19 will work in teams to talk about local issues that matter to them, they will set out their vision for the change the want to see on that issue and then they’ll design a campaign to make that change happen. By the end of the day their campaign will be ready to go and they will have skills in group working, stakeholder management and digital storytelling to make that campaign a reality.
Matthew Green, who leads UpRising in Birmingham, commented: “UpRising is a national charity which has been working in Birmingham for over four years. Over that time we’ve built up a body of young people in the city – our alumni – who we’ve trained intensively. Now we get to see the fruits of that work as these guys start sharing their skills and their knowledge with young Brummies on a massive scale. It’s really exciting”
The first social hackathon is part of a year-long project to share the skills of UpRising graduates with other young people across the city. The project will see UpRising alumni working in schools and with young people’s groups.
Tickets for the social hackathon are still available. Any young people wishing to come along to the free event can sign up themselves and their team at https://socialhackmarch2014.eventbrite.co.uk/
