Terry Wills waves his arms in the air and goes Sailing.
An admission; I’m not a great Rod Stewart fan. However I do recognise he is very popular singer with a string of hits, guaranteed to attract audiences far and wide, wherever and whenever he performs.
This musical isn’t a personal appearance nor a simple tribute act. It simply traces his rise from an
unknown, to the recognised superstar he is today. In the process it highlights the string of hits guaranteed to have the audience enthusiastically standing, cheering, clapping, and naturally,
joining in a mass sing-along wearing paper sailors hats handed out to commemorate his massive hit Sailing .
Ben Heathcoate plays Stuart – Rod Stewart – with panache, and together with excellent backing from dancers and singers conveys his love for singing, and girls galore. Among his co-stars, Jenna LeeJames and Jade Ewan sang with feeling, and this, together with the highly enthusiastic group of dancers led to the expected final ovation.
Some of the songs passed me by but when Maggie May, Do Ya Think I’m Sexy? and of course Sailing rounded off the evening ,even I felt the urge to join in the fun.
Yes, a great evening for all Rod Stewar t devotees, succinctly summed up as they donned those Sailing hats and pleaded for more.
Tonight’s the Night is at the New Alexandra Theatre until 1st March.
