This summer The Public is set to come alive with activity, as a host of entertaining workshops, inspirational exhibitions and fun-filled events look to amaze, engage and delight visitors.
Widely recognised as a venue of choice for a great day out in the Black Country, The Public continues to attract visitors from across the region with their exciting holiday activities.
Throughout the summer holidays, from 23 July to 4 September visitors of all ages will be able to marvel at the West Bromwich venue’s free ‘Art of Story’ exhibition, inspired by the fascinating world of stories and storytelling, and participate in a huge range of workshops including drop in art sessions, t-shirt designing, DJ workshops and a photography and image editing taster course.
Each Monday and Tuesday, from 25 July, the £3 ‘Summer Holiday Art Club’ follows a special different theme. Participants will be able to explore everything from outrageous recycled costumes to puppet designing, video shorts through to graffiti art drawing, creating some amazing, unique pieces of art. The art club will run in two sessions from 10.30am and 1pm respectively.
Designed specifically for the younger audience, the ‘Little People’s Art Zone’, starting on 27 July will take place each Wednesday, throughout the holidays, aims to get little ones playing with colour and texture. Suitable for children up to the age of four, the free workshop will operate on a drop in basis from 10.30pm to 12.30pm and 1pm to 3pm.
After the success of the Draw-Bot robot drawing workshops during the Easter holidays, a special ‘Draw-Bot Derby’ takes place on 28 and 29 July, 10 & 11 August. Great fun for the whole family, the excitement begins as visitors are invited to build their own drawing robot using batteries and a simple motor. Once the bots are built the battle commences as participants are challenged to artistically outwit their competitors. The £3 fun-filled sessions which suitable for over 7s, run from 10.30pm to 12.30pm and 1pm to 3pm.
Throughout the summer, The Public will be teaming up with a number of local arts organisations to bring a host of hands on workshops specially for teens. Ones and Twos will be holding free DJ workshops on 18 and 19 August, teaching budding DJs a variety of mixing techniques, and JH Foundation bring two workshops, ‘Make a Pinhole Camera’ (27 July and 3 August) and ‘Making Motion Pictures’ (28 July and 4 August), both £3, combing everyday objects with cool art techniques to create amazing works of art.
On Adult Learning Day on Friday 29 July The Public will be holding two workshops specifically for over 16s. In ‘Adult Learners: Life Drawing’, both new starters and experienced artists are invited to develop their creative skills, and in the ‘Adult Learners: Photography and Image Editing Taster’ class, work with a professional artists to discover new and creative methods of using photography and editing software. Both classes are £6 with materials and print included, and run from 10am to 3pm.
