What a day, eh?
Glorious sunshine. Arsenal at the Hawthorns. Albion unbeaten in four games and Roy Hodgson hoping for a result to prevent the relegation pack gaining, or extending, an advantage over the Baggies.
It couldn’t have started better. Three minutes on the clock and the large contingent of Gunners supporters were stunned with Steven Reid powering home a header. A goal up, we were on our way.
The expected response – waves of attacks from Arsenal, determined to prove they weren’t in the mood to lose another game against a Midland club.
Thirteen minutes into the second-half and the seemingly expected cock up from an Arsenal keeper. Peter Odemwingie wheeling away in delight as he nonchalantly slid home the second goal. We couldn’t believe Albion really were on their way to a memorable victory and, with what I hoped was tongue in cheek humour, I laughingly said “I’ll take a 2-2 draw now.” No way would we toss away the advantage as against West Ham United. Yes, those three points were as good in the bag.
Sadly, no-one bothered to tell Arsenal and after Arshavin and Van Persie had levelled the scores (based solely on the amount of possession and chances created) it was Arsene Wenger disappointed they hadn’t gone to win the game. Although IF Fortune had tucked away a very good scoring opportunity even then we could have sneaked a winner.
Again, Roy Hodgson’s tactical ability had shone through. If Roberto Di Matteo had still been in charge I very much doubt if his’defence would have held out against the unceasing amount of Arsenal attacks. So a valuable point leaving Albion, along with Villa, Blues, Wolves and the rest of the worried clubs, clinging on to their belief that they will avoid eventually avoid the drop.
No game this week due to the international Euro 2012 break which pits Cappelo’s giants against the minnows of Wales in the Millennium Stadium.
Prospects? No way can the Welsh Dragons beat the Three Lions of England, can they? That’s as likely as Ireland beating England at cricket.
