Here’s an odd one…. A man, his mouth and a microphone!
Shlomo: Mouthtronica
Thu 31 Mar, 7.30pm
The UK’s Loopstation Champion and acclaimed British beatboxer Shlomo will take to the mac stage on a mad one man musical mash-up in March 2011, using nothing but his mouth, a microphone and a loop sampler.
Mouthtronica is an intense mix of storytelling and high energy, genre-hopping, human beatboxing.
With some help from the audience, this oral magician creates breathtakingly original soundscapes ranging from experimental vocal acrobatics to jaw-dropping one-man renditions of the classic tunes we all love. Through Mouthtronica, Shlomo tells the unique story of how he became a beatboxer, going right back to when he was 3 years old playing Arabic drums and belly dancing at his Iraqi-Jewish grandmother’s parties. Shlomo is keen on using beatboxing as an educational tool, and will be running a beatboxing workshop at mac alongside the main performance.
Shlomo is one of the world’s finest human beatboxers, known for his experimental collaborations with a diverse range of artists such as DJ Yoda, Bjork, Martha Wainwright, Hexstatic, Portico Quartet, Jarvis Cocker, Mad Professor and his awesome beatbox troupe The Vocal Orchestra. His skills with his loop sampler are breathtaking, indeed he was recently crowned UK Loopstation Champion and will compete for the title of World Loopstation Champion in LA in January 2011. Shlomo’s musical journey so far has included training in classical percussion and jazz drums, studying Astrophysics and then making the jump to beatboxing with Bjork and appearing on the Jools Holland show. He is now an artist in residence at London’s Southbank Centre.
