It’s Aston Heritage Day today, 22nd June, and if you’ve got a couple of hours spare it can’t be recommended too highly.
Some of the most interesting buildings in the city will be open, it starts at 11.30 am, goes on until 5 pm and entry is free to them all.
Villa Park (where this year there will be guided mini-tours) and Aston Hall are the best-known attractions but there’s plenty more of interest. The Parish Church, which dates back to the 9th century, Aston Fire Station, where Black Sabbath apparently played their first gig, the Drum, the Victorian splendour of the Barton’s Arms and the ornate interior of Sacred Heart church are particular highlights while a visit to the Jame Masjid mosque is always an education, and there are plenty more buildings to visit in one of the most historic areas of the city. There will also be buses supplied by Aston Manor Transport Museum travelling between the venues.
