Collaboration aims to expand commercial activities.
A report outlining plans for the Library of Birmingham and the Birmingham Repertory Theatre (The REP) to develop a commercial partnership is set to be approved by Cabinet next week.
This arrangement, which is due to come into effect in October 2017, would see two of the city’s leading cultural assets working together to promote creative conferencing and hospitality opportunities.
Both of the nationally-renowned venues share a building on Centenary Square, in the heart of Birmingham, and through this partnership they will both be able to make better use of their events and conference spaces.
It is anticipated this scheme will generate income, enabling the Library and The REP to protect and invest in their respective services.
Through this relationship with The REP – which has already achieved success in promoting its venues and spaces for commercial use – the Library will be able to put itself on a stronger financial footing by accessing their expertise in this area.
Cllr Ian Ward, Deputy Leader of Birmingham City Council, said: “This is a very exciting opportunity for the Library of Birmingham and Birmingham Repertory Theatre to work together creatively to provide a truly unique facility.
“This partnership will enable us to protect and invest in services within the Library and further strengthens our relationship with our colleagues at The REP.”
Both organisations have developed successful events and conferencing over the past four years. However, a jointly commissioned independent report has identified significant further opportunities for both venues to generate income by operating joint management arrangements.
