International call-up for giant-killer.
European Championship glory beckons for a former Solihull School pupil whose goals produced one of the biggest shocks in football history last week.
Will Grigg scored twice in a 4-0 victory for League Two side MK Dons to sensationally knock mighty Manchester United out of the League Cup. The 23-year-old centre forward has now been named in the Northern Ireland squad to face Hungary in its opening 2016 European Championship qualifier this Sunday.
Will, currently on loan from Championship side Brentford, acquired his sporting prowess at Solihull where he represented the school in both rugby and athletics. He left in 2008 as an outstanding sprinter and long jumper.
Headmaster David E J J Lloyd commented: “I am extremely proud of Will’s success and I’m sure the whole school will be behind him for his senior European Championship debut.”
Having represented Northern Ireland at Under 19 and Under 21 level and the seniors in a friendly, Will fought back from breaking his leg at the age of 15 in Birmingham City’s youth system. On leaving Solihull, Will was signed up by League One side Walsall where he was voted Player of the Season and Player’s Player of the Season in 2012-13. After making 109 appearances and scoring 28 goals for the club, he joined Brentford last year and helped the side to achieve promotion as League One runners up.
