Iconic film scores reworked in a jazz setting.
Birmingham Jazz move temporarily to the Barton’s Arms, Newtown, on Friday 6th June for a one-off performance when the Film Music Project comes to town.
This special concert features US star Robert Mitchell on a Steinway Grand (shipped in for the day) with Birmingham Jazz favourite Larry Bartley on Bass (depping for Michael Janisch), Tom Harrison on Sax and Irish Drummer David Lyttle.
Everybody loves film! And behind every definitive scene, underpinning every actor’s move is music. Enrico Morricone’s famous theme from The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, or John Williams’ iconic theme from ET This project is a celebration of the work of these great artists of the silver screen. As an ensemble, the band explores the famous scenes of film, and their music, drawing on these more commercial reference points, and using them as a springboard for composition/improvisation – just as has more traditionally has been done with songs from the shows. Famous themes appear and are explored in a jazz context, paired with original compositions that are an alternative response to the film scene in question.
This is a mixed-media project that interprets film music in a jazz context, touring in 2014 leading to the production of an album later in the year.
Admission is £14 (members £11, students £5).
