Whatever symphonic metal might be, there’s a demonstration of it on Thursday 10th March, when Dutch band Epica play the Robin 2.An amalgam of classical, goth and heavy metal with a layering of synths, whether their operatic, orchestral arrangements work live, particularly in the confines of such a small venue, is open to debate but could be worth witnessing. Tickets are £13.
Saturday could hardly provide a greater contrast. In their prime the Pretty Things were the Rolling Stones’ yobbish brothers. While the Stones always made sure their rebellion never went too far to interfere with their success, the Pretty Things didn’t care who they annoyed. Their style of raunchy r’n’b was a fine counterpart to the American garage punks of the time with two of their songs later covered by David Bowie on his Pin-Ups album. SF Sorrow preceded the Who’s concept masterpiece Tommy while their 1970 release Parachutes was Rolling Stone magazine’s first album of the year. Probably the only band to influence both Led Zeppelin and the Sex Pistols, age has not mellowed them. Tickets £15
Meanwhile, Sunday sees the Robin continue to uphold its reputation for proving a home for the best up and coming talent in the area. Lunchtime sees the regular free acoustic session in Woody’s bar, while the evening features Arcadian Kicks from Kinver. This band released their debut album Making Lovers, produced by Mick Chapman (who worked on Blondie’s finest hours amongst many others), last year, when they also played the Isle of Wight and T in the Park festivals. Support is from Walsall based No Americana. Tickets £5.
