Warwick Arts Centre have announced their summer film series, including some whip-smart comedies guaranteed to make you forget the lousy weather.
Hghlights of the season include Friends with Kids, which reunites many of the Bridesmaids cast for an emotional comedy about the trials of parenthood. The Five-Year Engagement stars Emily Blunt and Jason Segal as a couple on a very long walk down the aisle, and the uplifting Seeking a Friend for the End of the World sees Dodge (Steve Carell) and Penny (Keira Knightley) forced to figure out the important things in life in the face of impending doom. In God Bless America, liberal America bites back to great comic effect, and in Lay the Favorite Rebecca Hall is cast completely against type as a wannabe cocktail waitress seeking her fortune in Vegas, who becomes embroiled in the shady world of gambling.
The genius of Woody Allen is celebrated in Woody Allen: A Documentary. It took director Robert B Weide over 20 years to convince the notoriously private film legend to be his documentary subject, and the resulting film is a must-see for film enthusiasts and fans of Allen’s life and work alike. There’s also a fascinating documentary about Donald Trump’s attempts to build a golf course on an unspoilt stretch of Scottish landscape, and the local residents’ efforts to stop him, in You’ve Been Trumped.
There are also some top-line foreign films during season, including Polisse which won the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival and was nominated for 13 César Awards. Directed by Maїween, the film follows a close-knit team of men and women working in the Child Protection Unit of the Parisian police. The Oscar-nominated Monsieur Lazhar is a deeply moving film about a middle school class’s struggle to cope with the death of their well-loved teacher, and The Players sees the award-winning team behind The Artist shine the spotlight on the thorny topic of male adultery.
Catching onto the trend for Scandinavian film and TV there’s A Royal Affair, a lavish costume drama from Denmark; and the Norwegian King of Devil’s Island is a tale of friendship, loyalty and rebellion based on a true story.
