“End youth unemployment for good” say East Birmingham MPs.
Liam Byrne and Jack Dromey today set out their ambition to end youth unemployment for good at the first East Birmingham Jobs Summit.
The summit co-chaired by Cllr Penny Holbrook, included Birmingham City Council Chief Executive Mark Rogers, the city’s regeneration team and the head of the Department for Work and Pensions for the city, Nigel Kempson.
East Birmingham has some of the highest unemployment in Britain. Last year East Birmingham’s three Labour MPs, Liam Byrne, Jack Dromey and Shabana Mahmood, helped launch the city’s first East Birmingham regeneration plan with a big plan to drive down unemployment across their constituencies for the first time coordinating new developments, skills funding and back to work support.
Liam Byrne said: “We’re proud that our Labour council is determined to make youth unemployment a thing of the past. With 43,000 vacancies across the city, we want to make sure that it’s not our youngest workers left out in the cold. We know the best thing you can give a young person is a chance – and that’s what the city’s leaders are determined to do”.
This is a good initiative and trust that it does not end up becoming a promise on paper. The ability to deal with unemployment in general requires a sustained concerted effort from various stakeholders. I am available for consultation in tis regard should you require my services.
