Heiner Goebbels is one of the world’s leading and most sought after creative artists. Walden is based on Henry David Thoreau’s account of his retreat to simple living and self-sufficiency, his experiences over two years in a cabin he built near Walden Pond close to Concord, Massachusetts. To celebrate the UK premiere of Walden, mac birmingham will be alive with events and activities throughout the day (see Walden Day in Events section for details).

The captivating imagery and refined movement draw you within centimetres of our performer who moves between robotic isolation and liquid fluidity. Existing somewhere between the digital and organic worlds our character embarks on a captivating journey to the infinite.

In collaboration with Hales Gallery, mac birmingham presents a major solo exhibition of animated works by London-based sculptor Tom Price. With an interest in the minutiae of body language and facial expression, Price crafts and animates a series of clay models which are projected as colossal blinking heads gazing directly at the viewer.

What does it mean to be a British Pakistani male living in contemporary British society?
Birmingham artist, Mahtab Hussain, has spent three years photographing his own community, exploring the important relationship between identity and masculinity. His portraits reveal men who consider and present themselves as both Pakistani men, but whose lives have existed wholly in the UK.

I Infinite is an interactive installation inspired by the digital world’s quest to re-create life: graphic patterns slice through the space, glowing cubes fracture into a myriad of miniscule squares and pools of light hover in the air like oil on water. The captivating imagery and refined movement draw you within centimetres of our performer who moves between robotic isolation and liquid fluidity. Existing somewhere between the digital and organic worlds our character embarks on a captivating journey to the infinite.
In addition to the exhibition, there will also be performances in the gallery at various times (see Dance section for further details) – tickets priced £10 (£7).

Walden Day

Inspired by Goebbels’ work and Thoreau’s writing and ideas, the whole site of mac birmingham will be brought to life during the day, including new music theatre from Birmingham Conservatoire; outdoor folk sets on the Terrace; films in the cinema; visual work exhibited in the ALLOTMENT gallery spaces; talks and discussions in the Hexagon; writing workshops; and a ‘foraging menu’ in the café.
