Taming of the Shrews

Andy Munro watches Blues beat Shrewsbury Town.

In fairness, this particular set of Shrews didn’t need much taming apart from a fairly feisty display of defending from them in the first half hour.

However, there was only ever going to be one (comfortable) winner once Ben Davis stole in to open the scoring. Jay Stansfield and Kieran Dowell could have added to the scoreline soon afterwards but it was left to Ethan Laird to cap a fine performance with a second.

Blues continued to play the ball around in their usual patient manner but it was not until the appearance of Alfie May did they step up a gear. In fairness, a contributor to this change of tempo was wide man Emil Hansson, who ran at the opposition defence at every possible opportunity.

Alfie May fired in his first from close range and scored his second when he rounded the opposition keeper to coolly slot home like the Alfie of old. In fact, he nearly notched a third in what would have been a spectacular fifteen minute hat trick but either way, this should do wonders for his confidence.

At the back, the Blues defence generally ruled the roost and behind them Ryan Allsop had little to do apart from pick the ball out of his own net in the closing stages. However, despite that, his calm and precise distribution with his feet from the back throughout the game would have done justice to Sir Bobby Moore.

Surely three or four more wins should guarantee Blues promotion, hopefully as champions.
