Health and wellbeing workshops to take place across the Black Country.
The William Wilson Turner Foundation is delivering free health and wellbeing workshops in February and March in Oldbury, Smethwick and West Bromwich under the banner HealthWise – Prevent and Prosper.
Funded by Sandwell MBC and the NHS Black Country Integrated Care Team through Adult Social Care Discharges Fund, the workshops aim to empower participants to improve their health and reduce the likelihood of hospital admissions.
The workshops will be introduced by fictional character, retired nurse Miss Ida, with each session taking place in a community space offering attendees practical advice and support covering Diabetes Management and Prevention; Alcohol and Substance Misuse and Awareness; and Maternal Health and Prenatal Care.
Joan Blaney CBE, CEO of The William Wilson Turner Foundation said: “These workshops are aimed at increasing awareness of key health issues and adding to attendees understanding of the impact lifestyle choices can have on our health. Working with specialists in each health area we cover, we will encourage adoption of healthier habits and promote preventive measures to reduce the risk of serious health complications and hospital admissions.
“We hope that through meeting people in the spaces they already meet, and through bringing along our Miss Ida character, the sessions will seem welcoming and accessible.”
All the workshops are free to attend, booking is not required. The details of the sessions are as follows:
Wednesday 5th March, 10.30am–12.30pm Diabetes Management and Prevention – providing guidance on nutrition, diet and the role of physical exercise in diabetes management. Includes welcome from Miss Ida. African Caribbean Resource Centre, Thomas Street, West Bromwich
Friday 7th March, 10.30am–12.30pm. Alcohol and Substance Misuse Awareness – increasing understanding of associated risks and available options. Includes welcome from Miss Ida. Cranstoun Sandwell, 128b Oldbury Road, Smethwick
Wednesday 12th March, 12.30pm–2.30pm Maternal Health and Prenatal Care – discussion around pregnancy and postnatal care, addressing disparities, particularly among black women who are 4 times more likely to die in childbirth than any other group.Bread for Life, New Testament Church of God, Church Road, Oldbury
