Cambridge taught a lesson

Blues beat Cambridge United as Andy Munro watches.

To be frank, Tuesday night’s opponents were by some stretch the worst team that Blues have played this season, yet as is often the way in football, Gary Monk’s Cambridge United side have amazingly taken points off both Wycombe and Wrexham already.

The visitors never really laid a glove on the Blues defence and Ryan Allsop was able to patrol his area like a goalkeeping Beckenbauer. Ethan Laird again showed his new-found quality going forward whilst Ben Davies and Christoph Klarer were invincible at the back. Sadly, the latter was forced off with an injury, although to be fair substitute Grant Hanley acquitted himself well.

In front of them Paik Seung-ho was his usual majestic self and Tomoki Iwata equally influential, without being able to score his usual screamer.

Loanee Keiran Dowell must warrant a chant of “Sign him up, sign him up” at the end of the season; he capped a fine performance with a well-taken goal from an excellent move. Further up, Keshi Anderson continued his run of excellent performances whilst the returning Willum Willumsson is getting up to speed.

The figurehead was Jay Stansfield, who netted a penalty although he will be disappointed that he was denied a second from the spot due to the keeper’s ankle. Returning to the subs, Scott Wright was a bundle of tricks although his final ball was a bit wayward.

It was certainly another good day at the office, or should that read ‘university’ given the opposition?
