No illuminations against Blackpool

Andy Munro watches Blues’ goaless draw at home to Blackpool.

This was a real bore draw but if anybody deserved to come away with three points then it was the Seasiders. There was an early blow for Blues with what looked like a serious injury to Lee Buchanan but in truth the team laboured to create anything and seemed to have no idea on how to beat the visitors’ effective press.

At the back Blues looked vulnerable down the middle until Mr Dependable Ben Davies came on, whilst both fullbacks overlapped but spoilt that ploy with some turgid and wasteful crossing. Up front Lyndon Dykes lumbered about and got little change from a resolute Blackpool defence and ditto Alfie May, who buzzed around but without possessing any sting.

However,it was mystifying that when Emil Hansson went off presumed injured, Blues brought on a central midfielder instead of gambling with the mercurial Ayumu Yokoyama. Jay Stansfield came on and was unlucky not to score and Willum Willumsson should have done better on a couple of occasions but fluffed his lines, which for our apparently second most-expensive player is becoming a worrying trend.

It was certainly a bad day at the office even though we remain top of the league. But if there are many more displays like this one, how long will that last?
