How Birmingham boxer Liam O’Hare is showing another side to his dazzling footwork.
Midlands super-middleweight champion Liam O’Hare wins his debut GBM and DAZN TV appearance in real style, knocking out Yorkshire’s Harry Mathews in the fourth round in Coventry on Saturday night.
O’Hare, 27, who boxes out of Jon Pegg’s Eastside Gym in Birmingham, made quite an impression walking into the Skydome Arena to Beethoven’s Fur Elise (Klutch Dubstep Trap Remix) and entertaining the crowd to some ballet moves that built up to a powerful climax and rapturous applause.
It was quite an entrance that captured his origins as a ballet dancer with the Elmhurst Royal Ballet school, Birmingham before using that talent to become a professional boxer. Liam is Brummie boxing’s ivery own Billy Elliot in reverse.
Taking the fight with only eight days notice, Liam was fighting Harry Matthews, an experienced cruiserweight nearly a stone heavier. But right from the bell, Liam showed his superior movement, strength and quick hands forcing the bigger man onto the back foot.
Matthews countered with a few good shots but was repaid in full by some excellent combinations as Liam continued to dominated the centre of the ring. As the fight progressed, Liam’s accuracy and powerful body shots began to wear his man down and produced a light ning right hook in the fourth, sending his opponent across the floor to end the contest.
He remains undefeated with nine wins, three by stoppage, and based on this showing he can expect more TV appearances as he advances towards the British title and beyond.
Commenting after the fight, Liam thanked his supporters and his main sponsor Furniture.co.uk, and said: “It was a great night and such a privilege to be on such a big GBM event. I am still improving with each fight and hope that I can continue to get the opportunities to showcase my skills.”
Liam is hoping to be back in action later this month. Until then he can be followed on social media and his latest fight can be viewed on the DAZN boxing app.
