Andy Munro enjoys a nervous Blues win against Sheffield Wednesday.
You have to wonder what would have happened if Blues had lost to bottom of the table Sheffield Wednesday, which certainly looked on the cards after a mostly drab first half. The opposition made the most of our lack of confidence in trying to play the Rooney way by closing us down at every opportunity
It was therefore no surprise to go a goal down and in truth it could have been worse, with John Ruddy making an enforced error and Wednesday missing a virtual open goal. Luckily Juninho Bacuna came up with a wonder goal to equalise just before half-time despite his performance being generally hit and miss.
Thankfully things improved after the break, especially when the ineffective Ollie Burke was replaced by the old dependable warhorse in the shape of the Juke. This gave Jay Stansfield more support and room to use his skills to lay on the winner for sub Jordan James to coolly slot home at the second attempt.
A narrow win against the rock-bottom Owls is hardly something to ‘crow’ about but hopefully we can now start to play with more confidence. Finally, a word for Blues’ two star men in Lee Buchanan and Ethan Laird, who were at the heart of most of the better moments in this overdue Blues win.
